Building Futures: WVHS Construction Program Partners with Habitat for Humanity

During the past semester, students in the West Valley High School Construction Program took their skills out of the classroom and into the community by partnering with Habitat for Humanity on a meaningful project. This partnership provided not only a hands-on learning opportunity for our students but, more importantly, it contributed to the creation of a new home for a local family in need.

Under the guidance of our dedicated construction instructor, Stephen Matczak, students worked side-by-side with Habitat for Humanity volunteers, professional builders, and the future homeowners. Together, they tackled tasks ranging from painting to landscaping. This real-world experience allowed students to apply the techniques they have been learning in class, while fostering teamwork and problem-solving skills.

“Seeing our students gain confidence and pride in their abilities while making a positive impact on the community is incredibly rewarding,” said Mr. Matczak. “This project is a perfect example of how education extends beyond the classroom and connects students to real-life applications of their learning.”

West Valley’s partnership with Habitat for Humanity reflects the school district’s commitment to Career and Technical Education (CTE) and community engagement. By participating in this project, students not only enhanced their construction skills but also developed a deeper understanding of the importance of service and giving back.

Students expressed enthusiasm about the experience, with many sharing that it was their first time working on a construction site. “It felt great knowing that our work is helping someone in our community,” said Ignacio Juarez Lopez Jr., a senior in the program. “I learned so much about what it’s like to be part of a construction team and how important attention to detail is in every step of the process.”

The completed home was unveiled in a heartwarming ceremony, where students, teachers, and Habitat for Humanity representatives joined the new homeowners in celebrating their journey to homeownership. The project not only highlighted the students’ craftsmanship but also reinforced the values of compassion and collaboration.

Executive Director of Innovation, Jed Watters, serves as the district’s leader for Career and Technical Education and the development of Career Pathway programs for students in West Valley.

Mr. Watters explained, “The Construction Program’s involvement in the Habitat for Humanity project is just one of many ways that the West Valley School District is preparing students for success in the workforce while instilling a sense of community responsibility. We look forward to future opportunities to expand our students’ horizons through similar partnerships.”
